Structure
Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) vibration control systems are used to counter wind and earthquake. A TMD is a device in which weights installed on the upper floors of a building reduce sway. At Taipei 101, weights (masses) weighing 650t are installed on floors 88-92. The sphere-shaped masses were fabricated by welding thin plates on site. The masses are suspended from above by cables and also supported from below by dampers. Dampers efficiently absorb energy, preventing the discomfort of wind-induced shaking and damage to buildings caused by earthquakes.
One of the structural features of Taipei 101 is the CFT columns. CFT columns are a method of construction in which concrete is used to support steel columns that are vulnerable to compression by filling the interior of the columns with concrete. CFT columns are a relatively new construction method, often used especially in high-rise buildings. CFT columns are used in Taipei 101 from the fifth basement floor to the 62nd floor above ground.
Appearance
The exterior of Taipei 101 is based on the bamboo motif, which is considered auspicious in Taiwan. The letter ‘8’, which is considered auspicious in the Chinese-speaking world, is also used. Taipei 101 is made up of eight sections, each of which consists of eight floors. The circular objects on the lower levels are inspired by old money.
Other Information
Taipei 101 is used as a commercial centre on the lower floors and offices on the upper floors. The lower level includes an Apple Store, Starbucks Coffee and a food court.
